【Japan's Most Beloved Entry Fountain Pen, in a Dreamy New Colour — PILOT Kakuno Madoromi Light Blue】Made in Japan
■ Product Features
PILOT (パイロット) is one of Japan's oldest and most respected writing instrument manufacturers, founded in 1918 and credited with pioneering advances in fountain pen, ballpoint pen, and erasable ink technology across more than a century of production. The Kakuno (カクノ) — whose name combines the Japanese words for "writing" (書く, kaku) and "hexagonal" (角, kaku) — is PILOT's best-selling entry-level fountain pen, designed to make the fountain pen experience accessible to anyone trying it for the first time while remaining genuinely pleasurable for experienced users.
The Madoromi (まどろみ, "drowsiness" or "half-sleep") Colour Series represents the adult evolution of the Kakuno line — moving away from primary colours toward a palette of quiet, sophisticated pastels inspired by the colours of a sky at dusk. Madoromi Light Blue captures the pale, calm quality of a late-afternoon sky — a colour that reads as distinctly Japanese in its restraint and refinement, neither bold nor neutral, sitting in the particular register of colour that Japanese design culture has elevated into an art form.
The Kakuno's hexagonal body — the same cross-section as a traditional pencil — prevents rolling, improves grip stability, and gives the pen a reassuring solidity in the hand. The triangular grip section guides the fingers naturally into the correct holding position, making it particularly useful for those new to fountain pen writing. The gold-coloured nib is a step up from the standard Kakuno's silver nib, adding a touch of elegance that suits the more refined Madoromi colour palette.
The Madoromi series is a Japan-exclusive release, not distributed through PILOT's international retail channels — making it genuinely difficult to obtain outside Japan.
■ Recommended For
Those beginning their fountain pen journey who want a beautiful, high-quality Japanese pen; anyone who appreciates the quiet sophistication of Japanese colour sensibility; those giving a refined, distinctly Japanese stationery gift; collectors of limited Japanese stationery releases; those who want an everyday writing pen that is also a pleasure to look at.
■ Contents
PILOT Kakuno Madoromi Light Blue fountain pen, Fine nib (F) — genuine Japanese retail product. Includes one ink cartridge.
■ Key Ingredients / Materials
Special alloy gold-coloured nib; triangular grip; hexagonal body in Madoromi Light Blue; recycled resin body; compatible with PILOT cartridge ink and CON-40/CON-70N converter (sold separately)
■ How to Use
Insert ink cartridge (included) into the grip section. Allow ink to flow to the nib — takes approximately 1 minute on first use. Hold at approximately 50-60 degrees to the paper with the nib facing up. Write with light pressure — fountain pens require no downward force. Cap when not in use. Rinse with water periodically to maintain ink flow.
■ Precautions
Keep out of reach of children. Do not disassemble the nib unit. Store capped when not in use to prevent ink drying. Avoid exposure to extreme heat or direct sunlight. Not suitable for use on official or legal documents where permanence is required (standard fountain pen ink is water-soluble).
